Natural Remedies

Untitled

It's strange what having a cold does to you. All you want to do is be healthy again and swear off all the junk food and staying up late activities. I admire how people just do their normal routine packed with natural remedies or meds. I visited my parent's house this past weekend and it is possibly the best place to recover from catching a cold. They're home is packed with natural remedies like fresh ginger, a whole lemongrass plant, lemons, and plenty of tea.

So how do you cope with having a cold? What are your natural remedies?

  1. Even though you were/are sick, you still manage to take such beautiful photos!! And what better subject than tea! That tea set is adorable - it reminds me of honeycombs :) Feel better, Tana! I hate hate hate getting sick! Years ago, I used to have a horrible immune system - if there was someone remotely close to me who was sick, I'd be sure to get sick too. If I didn't get my full 8 hours of sleep, I was sure to get sick. Then I started taking those wellness pills I told you about on a daily basis and my immune system has boosted tremendously! I usually get sick only once a year now rather than once every few months! I have realized how important it is to take care of yourself and taking natural supplements are so necessary (i.e. B12, flax oil, calcium...)! Feel better! Sending you healthy vibes :)

    1. Aww thank you Jess! These were the only photos I could muster up the energy for last week. The tea set absolutely looks like honeycombs--didn't realize it until now! Actually I think I got sick because I hadn't been getting 8 hours of sleep like you mentioned--what a difference it makes. I'm definitely going to look into those wellness pills. So glad to hear that your health improved because of it and thank you for the healthy vibes! Looking forward to this weekend. :)

  4. I do ginger and basil tea. I'm gluten-free so I always look to my digestion if I'm not feeling well, and both ginger and basil are good for that. I eat healthful foods like oranges and such when I feel like I'm battling something. Nothing beats rest, giving up sugar/caffeine, and drinking lots of water, though.

    1. Ohh I knew about ginger but not about basil! Oranges make such a huge difference, especially for the through. Giving up caffeine was the hardest but I did sneak a little bit of black tea :P Thank you Kate for your suggestions!

  7. I feel the same way, I don't know how people continue on with their normal lives when they're sick! My boyfriend is one of them. I'm definitely the opposite.

Tea is such a great remedy, and if I'm really sick, I do this weird trick where I bundle up with a billion blankets and literally force myself to sweat the virus out. Strange, but it works every time (my dad taught me that). Hope you're feeling better soon dear!

    1. omgoodness, exactly! My husband can carry on even if he's sick. I'm so amazed and impressed by it.

I've heard about bundling up and sweating the virus out. I accidentally did it once by watching a movie and it was really cold out. Felt so much better after that. Thank you Kristyn! :)

  12. I so wish I could swear off junk food & staying up too late! I try so hard, but these habits are engrained in me. I am doing better at staying away from the junk food & eating more of the rainbow. That paired with exercise has really helped me keep sickness away! I'll drink a cup of black tea too especially if I have a sore throat!

    1. oh exactly, Dani! Those junk food habits are definitely engrained in me too but I'm trying to not buy much and avoid fast food. Kind of fell off last week and don't think that would be the case if I had exercised more. Thank you for your suggestions! :)

  13. Netflix and ginkgo biloba+hot green tea does the trick for me! :-)

On occasion I'll eat random cloves of garlic which seems to work freakishly well for a pick me up.. since you asked.
For nasal congestion, I'll typically rely on western medicine but just nibbling on a ghost pepper has proven to be equally effective.

If you're brave enough, a very popular ayurvedic remedy is to take a shot of honey, ginger water, and turmeric power. Mix it with hot milk/tea and drink generously if you're about to hit the low.
The key is turmeric, which is believed to have many antibacterial and antiflammatory properties and acts as a natural cough suppressant and cold remedy. The honey helps sooth sore throat, but more importantly makes the concoction bearable.

    Nice blog Tana,
I'll be waiting for an invite to try out some of that wicked tea you're brewing..X

    1. Thank you for your suggestions, Ram! I've heard turmeric has anti-flammatory properties but didn't think to add that to my tea this past week. I will definitely have this in mind for the next time I'm feeling down! True, I don't really know a natural remedy for nasal congestion except for a "neti pot" and that just gives me goosebumps because I can't stand the feeling of water in my nose but it seems to be a natural remedy!

And Netflix is an absolute must!;) I caught up on so many French movies like Populaire (loved it!), The Big Picture (didn't love it!), and My Worst Nightmare (so-so!). Thanks again! :)
