When I first heard about the Instax Mini 90, I immediately shared the link with all my photo buddies. One of my friends, Jolie, mentioned that she would be in Japan at the exact time that the camera came out!! (it would take a few months for it to come out in the U.S). A huge thanks to Jolie for picking this up on your trip to Japan earlier this year!
A few features that are new and exciting about this camera:
First// The Macro feature allows you to get close-up detail shots of say something like these flowers below. You can get crisp shots straight from the setting. Previously, you'd have to use this small attachment thing that was easy to lose and it was all sorts of unpredictable. Not so much anymore! This feature is great for stills and will definitely be using this the most.
Second// The double exposure feature allows you to layer two images on top of each other to get an effect like this. *Tip: If you want to take photos like this, (First) shoot the silhouette you want against something that's back-lit like a clear sky and (Second) take a photo of whatever pattern you want to fill within the silhouette.* Also do you see that black dot in the third photo? It's the sun! So don't shoot with the sun in background. :)
Third// Manual settings give more flexibility for exposure. You have control over taking lighter or darker photos and if you want the flash off or not. Previously you could only do the former and the flash was just hit or miss. As you can see with the beach pictures, I overexposed on one of them, then I did a normal photo and then I did a dark photo.

Anyone else use Instax cameras? Isn't it so much fun? Have any questions? Hope you have a great week ahead!

I have the model that came out before this one, full black. I haven't used it in a while thought despite having some film piled up. Must fix that soon, thanks for the reminder. This camera looks soooo gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteTotally agree, this camera looks so nice! That's definitely another reason I like it, it looks more legit and less like a toy as the other ones (which I personally loved too, just appreciate the contrast). Hope you get to shoot more with your instax,I have so much film piled up too!
DeleteOkay, this is pretty amazing, I love the double exposure and manual settings. I don't have the Instax camera, but I didn't like the flash before... now this, I can get on board with. Thank you for sharing your lovely photos and review, Tana! xo
ReplyDeleteRight on, Victoria! I really didn't like the flash on the other one so having more control over the settings is a very welcomed change. Hope you get one soon! ;) Thanks so much!

ReplyDeleteOh Giulia, I couldn't stop smiling reading your comment! Thank you thank you dear. I know you'd come up with some brilliant double exposures based on the ones you've posted in the past. Hope you get to play around with an instax soon too! :)

ReplyDeleteaww thanks so much, Jess! I hope you definitely get one of these soon, it's so totally worth it!! :)
DeleteHi doll, I tried capturing a few shots of my flower the other day in macro mode and they would either look overexposed (because there was flash) or very dark (after I turned the flash off), and I was wondering how did you manage to capture such a perfectly light-balanced image?
ReplyDeleteI'm still quite new to this instax thing. Thanks in advance :)
Hi Cee, sorry for the late response!
DeleteIt is sometimes a hit of miss with the macro mode but more consistently a hit with the Instax 90. A few factors to take into consideration: (1) are you in a lot of natural light? (2) if the flash is off and if it's still too dark, press the "L" option to make the photo a little lighter. (3) Are you around 15 cm away from your subject? (4) Is your background white or a different color. Brighter backgrounds will be a natural reflector to making the photo turn out lighter & brighter. :) Hope this helps.
There is definitely a lot of trial and error involved, I've spent so much on film trying to get it right with macro. Best of luck!
Your pictures are absolutely stunning! I love every single one. <3
ReplyDeleteBut I have a little question: When you take the double exposures, do you choose some special settings? Do you change the exposure and make the picture brighter or darker or do you just turn the settings into double exposure and take a picture of the silhouette and then of the pattern?
It just doesn't work for me and it would be great if you could help me.. :/ Thank you!
