Love for Lomography 03

Untitled

Ohhh man, it's been a LONG time since I last posted prints developed from the Diana. I got these in the mail probably a month ago and I just got to scanning them in. A few favorites below...

I experimented with an Ilford roll which is a highly contrasted black and white film. I really love the the stark contrasts in them and definitely plan to use it a lot more in the future. The only catch is that the photo lab charges 2x more for black and white film!

It's times like these when I question why I'm so passionate about photography because at the end of the day, it feels like it will only empty my pockets! But when I see my prints, it's feel so worth the energy and the time spent waiting for it to develop.

So I guess I'll just keep going at it but with more care and thoughtfulness in each photo. What about you? Do you use the Diana or any other film cameras?

  1. Oh Tana, these photos are absolutely beautiful. I, sadly, have never used a film camera - can you believe that? As much as I love photography, I've never ventured into film - I think I'm a little intimidated, but I know any captured memory is beautiful.

And Yes, please continue doing what you're doing, because you are so talented!

    1. aww thanks for the support, Victoria! As for film cameras, i totally understand how intimidating it feels. I felt that same way a few years ago. I think the best way to try it out is by maybe starting out with a toy camera (diana mini, holga...). They're simple without too many settings and a good way to understanding the basics. I do hope you try it out one day, it's a different experience entirely. :)

also, i am in love with the first shot, with how the brown of the coffee works with the black and white of the prints, beautiful!

  3. These are gorgeous, Tana! I used to develop my own b&w prints back in the day - so much fun even though I'd spend my entire weekend in the dark room!! Here in NY, developing prints can get preeety expensive, so I know what you mean about the empty pockets - but when you get them back, it's the best feeling! My bf is big into film cameras and has collected a few - I love seeing the developed results!

    1. Thanks, Jess! :) that's so cool that you used to develop your own film! I wished i had taken photography back in school so I would know how to too, but i guess it's never too late. I could only imagine how pricey developing film could be in NY but i do hope there's more photo labs out there. There's currently only 1 I really like in orange county. and you're right on, I totally love seeing the developed results too!

  4. These are absolutely lovely Tana. I especially adore that first shot of them all. I've never actually dabbled in film, in this way, only took pictures. You really have me thinking about learning a heck of a lot more about film development and the many approaches.

    1. Hey Aubrey, thanks so much! I've only really used film for the past year and a half and so far it's been well worth it. I'd definitely recommend the challenge of understanding film for yourself and the great thing is that there are so many tutorials and supportive people online that are more than happy to help with any questions that may come up!

  5. These are absolutely gorgeous - I love the beach shots! These days I'm pretty much 100% digital, but I occasionally buy disposable underwater cameras and THEY'RE SO MUCH FUN.

    1. Thanks so much Sarah! I think the beach shot is one of my favorites too! :) I agree, the underwater disposable cameras are seriously so much! Speaking of which... I still have to develop one of them from 6 months ago! ahhhh

    1. Heyyy Jolie!! :) Thanks so much! I wish I took a photography class back at Soka but I suppose it's not to late to enroll in one now. I hope you do shoot in film soon and can't wait to see the results! I'm sure it's going to be amazing and well worth the wait!

    1. Thanks, Court!! Isn't the instax mini so much fun?? I just recently got the mini 90s and i'm so excited for it. Hope you get a film camera and maybe the diana also, it's such a light and sweet camera to use! :)

  8. I can totally relate to this. Every time I get film developed I silently wonder why I keep putting myself through the wait/cost, etc..but then I get the pictures back and I fall in love all over again.
